Confederation of African Football, CAF, has appointed Rachel Nzigire from the Democratic Republic of Congo as the referee for the decisive 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup African qualifying second leg encounter between Falconets and Tanzania at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Ngarassoum Victorine from Chad will serve as assistant referee 1, while Carine Puazi and Carine Ampur, fellow countrywomen of Rachel, will be assistant referee 2 and fourth official, respectively. Additionally, Christine Ziga from Ghana has been named as the match commissioner.
The first leg between Falconets and Tanzania, held at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam, ended in a one-goal draw. Substitute Chioma Olise secured the lead for Nigeria in the 57th minute, and Asnath Ubamba equalized for Tanzania 13 minutes later. The upcoming encounter in Nigeria’s capital promises a closely contested battle between two ambitious squads.
Head Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma will rely on players like Olise and FIFA U17 World Cup bronze medallist Opeyemi Ajakaye to score the goals that could propel the 2022 quarter-finalists closer to securing a spot in the global finals in Colombia. Nigeria has maintained a consistent presence at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since its inception as an U19 tournament in Canada 21 years ago.
Goalkeeper Anderlin Mgbechi, who played in Dar es Salaam, is expected to start again, supported by a defensive lineup featuring U17 World Cup bronze medallist Comfort Folorunsho, captain Oluchi Ohaegbulem, and players like Jumoke Alani and Shukurat Oladipo.
The midfield, led by the petite yet creative Taiwo Afolabi (another U17 World Cup bronze medallist from India), is expected to include talents like Adoo Yina and Shola Shobowale. The stage is set for an intense clash as both teams vie for a coveted spot in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
