President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed immense joy on Monday night as Nigeria achieved notable successes at this year’s CAF Football Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco.
Personally attending the event at Hotel Movenpick, Gusau proudly accepted the first accolade earned by Nigeria—the Women’s National Team of the Year. He dedicated the award to all women’s football teams across the African continent.
Chiamaka Nnadozie, who showcased outstanding performances at the FIFA World Cup finals in Down Under this summer as the Super Falcons advanced to the Round of 16, claimed the well-deserved title of Goalkeeper of the Year (Women). The Paris FC goalkeeper delivered an inspiring speech, urging young girls in Africa to pursue their dreams in football.
After Asisat Oshoala secured her record-extending sixth award as the Player of the Year (Women), the atmosphere was hushed as the men’s version was announced. Victor Osimhen of Nigeria, Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, and Mohamed Salah of Egypt were the final contenders. Osimhen emerged victorious, marking the first time a Nigerian player has claimed this honour in 24 years since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
Gusau expressed his excitement, stating, “This has been immensely rewarding for our football and our country as a whole. I congratulate Osimhen, Oshoala, and Nnadozie, as well as the Super Falcons as a team for bringing us this honour. My charge to them is to continue excelling, improving, and winning. The sky will be the beginning for them.”
Osimhen’s achievement is historic as he becomes the first player in the African Football Awards’ history to be named Player of the Year (Men) after previously winning the Young Player of the Year (Men). Just last Monday, the 24-year-old secured the 2022/2023 Player of the Year in Italy’s Serie A, adding to his Young Player of the Year accolade from the 2021/2022 season.
