The Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has berated Serie A champion, Napoli over the mistreatment of Super Eagles sensational striker, Victor Osimhen.
In an assertion made on Friday, circulated on the minister’s X handle, formerly Twitter, the Minister said Nigerian sportsmen and women in the diaspora must be treated with dignity.
According to the Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy to the Honourable, the statement was issued following a viral video trolling Osimhen over missing a penalty kick in a football match against Bologna.
The matter to Ambassador Tuggar falls under the 4Ds Strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also known as the Tinubu doctrine, which mainstreams Democracy, Development, Diaspora and Demography, as part of its outward-looking objectives.
He said, “When we go about our duties, we should always remember article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
He accused Napoli not to have acted in the spirit of brotherhood by mocking their star player, Osimhen after he had helped the team to win the Series A Championship last season.
The Minister pledged that, “Nigeria shall continue to monitor happenings not only in Napoli but around the world on how her sportsmen and women are treated…”
Meanwhile, Napoli have issued an official statement saying they never wanted to offend or mock Osimhen, who is a treasure of the club.
“As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad,” the club expressed.
