Nigeria, a nine-time champion in Africa, started with their characteristic flair but struggled to break through Cameroon’s defense. In the 27th minute, Nigeria’s Toni Payne missed a chance to score, and Cameroon’s goalkeeper made a crucial save later in the first half.
The second half saw Cameroon gaining momentum, fueled by their home crowd at the Stade de la Reunification Douala. Nigeria seemed to have scored early in the half, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In another African qualifying match, South Africa defeated Tanzania 3-0 in Dar es Salaam, with goals from Jermaine Seoposenwe, Thembi Kgatlana, and Hildah Magaia.
The winner between Nigeria and Cameroon will likely face South Africa in the final round of qualifiers for a spot in Paris. The second leg between Nigeria and Cameroon will be held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday evening.
