Five-time world champions Nigeria and three-time world champions, Ghana, were knocked out of the WAFU B U17 Championship at the semi-final stage on Saturday. Burkina Faso defeated the host nation, while the Baby Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire narrowly ousted the Eaglets.
Burkina Faso secured their place in the final with a 2-1 victory over the Black Starlets. In the second semi-final, Côte d’Ivoire’s Youbah Coulibaly capitalized on a defensive error by Nigeria in the 54th minute, scoring the decisive goal at the University of Accra Stadium.
The Eaglets faced a tough challenge as the Baby Elephants displayed superior composure and determination for a spot in the final. Nigerian goalkeeper Dominic Chinedu made several crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
As a result, the Golden Eaglets will not participate in next year’s Africa U17 Cup of Nations, missing the chance to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup finals.
