Sometimes as a student, you battle with lots of worries that build up into stress. You worry about intense lectures, loads of assignments, practicals and tutorials.
Oftentimes, meeting up with good standing as required by your academic demands; settling debt, coping with financial challenges, and getting along with other students like your roommates or coursemates may be daunting.
You may also have to battle loneliness, what to do after graduation, unavailability of jobs and many others.
However, these worries can be well managed if you take the following steps.
Exercise
You may have to go for exercise when you are stressed up. Try a little exercise like walking around for some 20 to 30 minutes to get your mind in order. Involving in activities such as hiking, playing basketball, cycling and dancing can relieve you of stress.
Relax Your Body
You may have to relax your body. Doing some body massage to relax your muscles is a way of relieving you of stress. When you relax your body you find it easier to relax your mind. You may sit in a comfortable chair or sleep on a bed. You close your eyes, then concentrate on different parts of your body and relax them.
What is Your Pastime?
What are your hobbies? You might just try your hand on them to deal with stress. Do you like listening to music? It might just help.
Sleep well
Good sleep will relax your body. Always sleep well to battle the worries you encounter in your academic endeavour. However, avoid oversleeping so that it will not affect your study. Balance your sleep and study.
Mindfulness
Adopt Zen’s Philosophy by accepting the reality of the moment, taking it that all situations are not permanent. This might be the best way to avoid reacting negatively to stress. Sometimes when you are stressed, you just might need deep breathing. Just breathe in and out through your nose
Reduce Intake of Alcohol
Reduce or stop the intake of alcohol and caffeine.
Leisure/Recreation
When you take part in leisure and recreation, it might remove worries. Go to amusement parks, embark on sightseeing, watch football, be involved in games, read books, join clubs, associations and societies, and go for entertainment.
Confide in somebody
Talk about your stressful situation to your college counsellor or therapist. A concern shared is half solved. Your counsellor will help diagnose the concern and help you adjust to the stressful situations.
You could also give yourself a break, and engage in what will make you laugh. Look for what will amuse you, watch comedy shows and suspend what is tensing you up at the moment. Solve challenges or puzzles one after the other. Don’t attempt to solve at the same time.
