Insecurity has crept into our campuses as heinous activities of bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and other criminals are on the increase, living students open to attacks of different types.
However, you can stay safe by following these steps:
BE SECURITY CONSCIOUS
Always think security on the campus. If you know something say something. Know how to get in touch with security personnel on your campus. Get their numbers and know their locations. Let them be aware of any security breach.
READ BOOKS ON SECURITY
Don’t restrict yourself only to your course books. Read books that will provide you tips on security. Any literature that will intimate you with security briefs is important to you.
DON’T WALK ALONE
It will be dangerous for you to walk the campus alone. Walk in company of others or your friends, or groups. It is much safer when you walk in groups than walk alone.
ARM YOURSELF WITH SECURITY EQUIPMENT
It is illegal to carry or use gun, but you can arm yourself with equipment like whistle to raise alarm when you suspect any fowl play. Have a touch on yourself or anything that can raise alarm or call attention of others.
DON’T WALK TOO LATE IN THE NIGHT
Always do whatever you want to do during the day within your campus. Whatever you want to do in the night should be restricted to your room of residence. Don’t walk about in the night. Also be careful when you attend night functions. It might be dangerous.
SECURE YOUR PROPERTIES
Have a very good lock to protect your properties from being stolen.Get good keys and select your friends.
TAKE PRECAUTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Be careful about the information you supply on the social media about yourself. Don’t reveal a lot about yourself. There are some information you keep to yourself. Be care about what you reveal on Facebook, Instagram, X and others. Be careful about Facebook friends and chats.
KNOW ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL
If possible download your campus map and use GPS to find popular heavily congested route. Know dangerous spots on your finger tips and avoid going there.
AVOID TREKKING ALONG BUSHY/LONELY ROUTE
Don’t trek or walk through deserted paths, it could be dangerous. Don’t walk along bushy or quiet area. Dangers can lock around in those places.
TAKE SELF-DEFENCE LESSONS
It is not bad if you learn how to defend yourself. Take some Kungful and Karate lessons for self-defence. Know about simple self defence and ensure you master those skills.
PAY ATTENTION TO PEOPLE
Always pay attention to people around you, study everyone. Take a closer look at their faces. What is their body language saying? What are their eyes or faces communicating? Who is loitering around your residential area on the campus? Who is following or studying your movement? Take note of new faces, study their actions. Be careful.
