The National Examinations Council (NECO) has said that its migration from Paper-Based Tests to Computer-Based Tests (CBT) will be a gradual process.
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists, while enumerating the key milestones achieved by the Council, the Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Wushishi, expressed that the complexity of the examination might not allow for an immediate migration from the Paper-Based test to CBT.
Professor Wushishi explained, “The fact that NECO is the largest examination body by the number of examinations we conduct makes migrating to CBT a critical issue.
“As far as NECO is concerned, if you look at the nature of all our exams, particularly in SSCE internal, for admission into tertiary institutions, every year we examine students close to 1.5 million, which is a large number.
For these 1.5 million candidates, we examine them in 76 different subjects and more than 150 different papers. So, if we look at the complexity of these examinations, particularly the essays where we have different papers, going to CBT is something that experts need to sit and look at the nitty-gritty of the exam,” Professor Wushishi pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Council has denied extending the closing date for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination, scheduled to take place from Tuesday, June 4 to Monday, June 10, 2024.
According to a release by the Council’s Acting Director, Directorate of Information and Digital Communication, Azeez Sanni, the closing date for registration remains June 3, 2024.
In light of this, NECO insisted that the registration, which commenced on Monday, December 18, 2023, would close on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The Council dissociated itself from a report being paraded on social media platforms that it had granted an extension to the date of the exam as earlier scheduled.
The Council, therefore, enjoined candidates, school principals, commandants, state ministries of education, and other stakeholders to shun the social media post spreading the rumour that the date of the examination had been shifted to Monday, June 20, 2024.
