The opinion of many parents and students is that the National Examination Council (NECO) is not recognized internationally. It is also a widely held view that not all Nigerian Universities recognize it.
That is why many students don’t attempt to sit for it, unlike the West African Examinations Council ( WAEC), which has gained prominence over time.
However, nowadays parents and students are being encouraged to register for NECO alongside WAEC. At present, many students make wise decisions by sitting for both examinations and then using the better one to pursue admission into the institution of their choice.
NECO was established in April 1999 by the government of General Abdusalam Abubakar (Retd), having its headquarters in Minna.
It conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate of Education in June/July and November/December.
It also conducts Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and National Common Entrance Examinations (NCEE).
NECO was established to take over the responsibilities of the National Board of Education Measurement (NBEM).
Nigerian Universities that Accept NECO:
Many federal, state, and private universities accept NECO for admission in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, some universities may require additional qualifications for some courses. As a result of this candidates are advised to check the admission requirements for any University and course they are applying for.
Foreign Universities that Accept NECO:
In the United Kingdom (UK), Sheffield University, Manchester University, Kent University, University of Birmingham and Plymouth University accept NECO.
In Canada, the University of Brandon, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Winnipeg accept NECO, however, Alberta University does not accept NECO.
The universities that accept NECO in the United States of America are very limited. All Ivy League universities in the US do not accept NECO, meanwhile, WAEC is recognized by all of these Universities.
