The entertainment world mourns the passing of Andre Braughe, one of America’s best-known actors who starred in the hit sit-com series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,”
Andre was diagnosed with lung cancer some months ago before his death on 11 December 2023 at the age of 61.
Braugher was born and raised in Chicago, attended Stanford University and a graduate diploma from Juilliard. All on scholarships
He made both his film and television debuts in 1989, appearing in the historical war drama Glory and the TV movies Kojak: Ariana and Kojak: Fatal Flaw.
He went on to appear in numerous television movies and shows throughout the 1990s but broke out in a big way with his starring role as Detective Frank Pembleton on the hit NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired from 1993 to 1998.
His stoic character and no-nonsense personality but a deep sense of humanity made him an instant fan favourite of the show.
A 2010 article in the Guardian called Braugher’s character Detective Pembleton “the smartest, sharpest master of the art of interrogation”. He was nominated twice for an Emmy and won in 1998, his last year on the series.
His net worth as of the time of death was put at $8 million, all said to be derived from acting in both TV shows and movies. He died on Monday after a brief illness, his publicist confirmed.
Andre Braugher was so versatile that he commanded the screen, and gave his all in drama and comedy, irrespective of big or small roles.
Dirk Blocker, who starred on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ with Andre Braugher, tells PEOPLE the late actor will be remembered for being “so giving of himself”
He is survived by his wife, Army Brabson and three sons.
