Countless of students have failed to achieve well in their academic endeavours as a result of shyness. Due to shyness they may not be able to defend their projects, speak at seminars, or add to discussions in their classes or groups. Shyness has limited them and restricted their successes. It has often led to low achievement in their school tasks.
Shyness is a hurdle in the way of progress. It limits and prevents exposure to opportunities. It is an emotional challenge that affects how a person feels and behaves around others. It is a state of feeling nervous, timid, and fearful.
When you are shy you notice some physical feelings such as shaking, stomach upset, uncoordinated thought and some other psychological conditions associated with fear such as social anxiety.
Shyness often makes people classify the sufferers as mediocres, non-achievers and unintelligent. They are looked down upon because they don’t talk and contribute to discussions in social gatherings.
Overcoming Shyness:
Prepare yourself well for tasks:
When you are faced with any task in your endeavour, like preparing for seminar, defending your project, or preparing for a talk at symposia or debates, as a youth or student, the first thing to do is to prepare well. Know everything about what you want to speak on so that you will be able to speak well in the public.
Rehearse:
Rehearse your talk very well. You may gather your friends or other school mates and speak in front of them. Let them criticize you so that you can improve. Also talk or speak at a small gathering.
Read Books on Public Speaking:
It is good to read books on how to speak in public. Learn from those books the procedures involved in dealing with shyness.
Watch People who Speak at Public Functions:
See what those who speak at public functions do. Observe how they go about speaking. Watch their gesticulations, actions, how they start, carry their listeners along, and how they conclude.
Acknowledge Shyness:
Acknowledge that shyness is part of you, but that it doesn’t define who you are. It is condition that you can overcome.
Engage in Conversation in Small Group:
Learn to start small. Take part in discussions with you friends, siblings. When you start in small way, you grow bit by bit. Take baby steps.
Be Outgoing:
Attend social functions that are not evil or at your detriment. Attend symposia, debates, departmental and faculty gatherings. Socialize with other students. Join good clubs and groups, and then learn to speak among them, or initiate discussions.
Deal with Low Self-Esteem:
Never look down on yourself, or think that you can’t do things. Have a can-do spirit and believe in yourself. Believe you are made of good quality. Don’t reject yourself.
Breathe Deeply:
When you are about to speak at a public gathering breathe in and out deeply. This will deal with shyness.
Visualize a Situation:
Imagine yourself speaking in public. Visualize how it will look like and what will likely happen during that event.
