The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former football star Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The decision comes after the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee recommended George for the position.
George, who previously served as an assistant coach to José Santos Peseiro, took over the role on an interim basis after Peseiro left following the team’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. In his interim role, George led the team to a 2-1 victory over Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but suffered a 0-2 loss to Mali in another friendly match.
A key member of Nigeria’s ‘Golden Generation,’ George won 62 caps for Nigeria and played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 1998. He also earned medals in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
George’s immediate challenge is to lead the Super Eagles to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic. The team currently sits in third place in Group C, behind Rwanda and South Africa, making these upcoming matches must-win encounters.
George’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Super Eagles, and fans are hopeful that his experience and expertise will lead the team to success in the upcoming qualifiers.
