The 2024 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) has started. When the examination is finally concluded, examiners are appointed by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to mark the scripts.
Who are the Examiners?
Examiners are a set of experienced teachers who have taught the subjects they are marking for several years.
They also know the classroom work concerning their subjects very well, and are experts in teaching-learning process. The identity of the examiners are not revealed.
Preparation
WAEC prepares for the marking of scripts by setting up a committee of experts that will prepare the marking guides to guarantee objective marking and curb irregularities.
The work of the committee of experts is to prepare and train examiners on all the aspects of the marking scheme during the coordination process.
After the training, all examiners are not left alone. They are organized into a team or group, each of which will be supervised by a highly experienced person called the Team Leader.
The duty of the Team Leader is to check the markings of each of the group members to ensure that guidelines are followed strictly.
Chief Examiners
They are more experienced examiners who supervise the Team Leader to curtail errors in the marking of scripts.
After Marking
When the marking of the scripts is finally completed, WAEC still employs another set of people called Checkers.
Checkers are employed to scrutinize the marking, finding out if the recordings done by examiners are appropriately and correctly done and transferred to the appropriate sheets.
What should Students do?
Examiners are not God. They are not perfect. They are also susceptible to errors. This is why students are supposed to read instructions on the exam papers very well and follow the instructions.
Ensure you write clearly and legibly enough for examiners to be able to read what you have written. Answer all questions that you are supposed to answer and don’t copy. Avoid making your answers look clumsy; hence arrange you answers very well and clearly.
Ensure you go straight to the point. Answer exactly what a question requires of you. Don’t beat about the bush. Avoid irrelevant things as much as possible.
