Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, Executive Secretary NUC
The Executive Secretary of National University Commission (NUC), Prof Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, has hinted that the commission will soon play host to a joint conference with the European Union (EU), Harvard University and the Sahelian Institute for Social and Economic Research.
According to Professor Adamu who disclosed this when he received the delegation from the Association of West African University (AWAU) in his office recently, the joint conference would bring together scholars from some universities in the region like Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Chad, Mali and Niger Republic sub-region.
He added that during the conference more awareness would be created about the expected roles of the university in solving some of the African Challenges.
Adamu decried the development that many of Nigeria’s counterparts and indeed other African countries across the world were beginning to question the relevance of the university system in Africa.
He warned that the African university system must not allow itself to be swallowed up by the misdeeds of their countries, but must find itself on the right side of history where the scholars need the change process to redeem the image of the continent.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary promised that the commission would do everything possible to support AWAU to achieve its aims and objectives in addition to using its powers to attract and galvanize support for universities in the sub-region and in Nigeria in particular.
