The National University Commission (NUC) has doused the growing tension over the reconstitution of governing councils after the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU) issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government.
According to the Executive Secretary of NUC, Chris Maiyaki, the Federal Government has swung into action, working to reconstitute the governing councils of its universities across the country.
Addressing journalists, Maiyaki said the Honourable Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, had constituted a panel to work on the list of people who would serve on the councils.
According to Maiyaki, the councils would be inaugurated once the list was completed. “Reconstituting the councils of 61 universities is not a small feat,” he added.
“The government is working to ensure that qualified individuals with the right pedigree are appointed to these councils, ” said Maiyaki.
ASUU had called on the Federal Government to reconstitute governing councils whose tenures had lapsed and reinstate those whose tenures had not yet expired so that universities could operate by their laws.
ASUU also sought to restore the dignity of academia in line with practices in forward-looking institutions.
On June 22, 2023, the NUC dissolved the governing councils of all federal universities and boards of other agencies and corporations across the country.
