The outspoken Irish singer known for her political provocations and off-stage activism, as well as her powerful and evocative voice in a masterful performance of her biggest hit, Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, Sinead O’Connor has died at the age of 56.
The Irish musician and an activist Bob Geldof, who is an age-long friend to the musician had written a statement confirming her death. Also, her family had released a statement, according to the BBC and Irish public broadcaster RTE.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead,” the statement said. “Her family and friends are devastated and have asked for privacy during this extremely difficult time.” No further details were provided.
O’Connor, recognizable for her shaved head and big eyes that look aching or angry, released ten studio albums in 1987, beginning with the alternative hit “The Lion and the Cobra.” She has since sold millions of albums worldwide. She got her break in 1990 with “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.”
The album, Nothing Compares 2 U, was a #1 hit worldwide, an MTV hit, and won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Interestingly, O’Connor refused to attend the awards.
In 1990, she infuriated none other than Frank Sinatra when she threatened to cancel her performance in New Jersey if the American flag blew in a concert hall before her performance.
That same year, she declined to appear on Saturday Night Live in protest of the misogyny she felt in a comedy co-hosted by Andrew Dice Clay.
O’Connor contributed immensely to the music industry globally. Some of her albums include, Am I Not Your Girl? “Why Don’t You Do Right?” Universal Mother, The Lion and the Cobra as well as “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”
