The Super Eagles of Nigeria yesterday beat the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in their second match of Group A of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Earlier, the first match of the group between Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau ended 4-2.
The first half of the match between Super Eagles and the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire ended goalless with the two sides unable to score.
Resumption of hostility resumed in the second half with the two teams creating chances to put the ball in the net.
All efforts proved abortive for the two teams trying to get an early goal in the second half of the match until CAF African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen was brought down in the penalty area of the Ivorians.
Eagles skipper Troost-Ekong took the responsibility upon himself and gave the Super Eagles the lead after scoring from the penalty spot.
Roared on by a raucous crowd, the Ivorians pushed hard for an equaliser but failed to create a clear chance against a solid Super Eagles defence.
Nigeria leapfrogs the Elephants to go second in Group A and are behind leaders Equatorial Guinea on head-to-head record. Cote d’Ivoire is in third position while Guinea Bissau is condemned to the bottom of the table.
