In a thrilling friendly encounter in Marrakech, the Nigerian Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Ghanaian Black Stars. This match marked Finidi George’s debut as the Super Eagles head coach, and his team delivered a performance that delighted fans.
The game saw goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman, who ensured Nigeria’s win with their impressive display. Dessers opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute after Jerome Opoku handled the ball in the box. Ghana’s challenges increased when Opoku was sent off for dissent in the 57th minute.
Despite the Black Stars’ efforts, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali stood tall, making crucial saves to deny Ghana. Lookman extended Nigeria’s lead late in the game, calmly finishing off a well-worked team move.
Captain Jordan Ayew pulled one back for Ghana from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but it was not enough to change the outcome. The victory was especially significant as it marked Nigeria’s first win over Ghana at the senior level in 18 years.
The Super Eagles will continue their preparations with another friendly against the Les Aigles of Mali at the same venue on Tuesday night.
