The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has urged the U20 girls’ team, Falconets, to move past their loss in the African Games women’s football event and concentrate on making a strong impact at the upcoming FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Gusau’s comments come after the Falconets’ 1-2 extra-time defeat by Ghana’s Black Princesses in the final match of the African Games women’s football event in Cape Coast.
“You played well and showed good skills and teamwork to the final, but your best was not enough to retain the gold medal,” Gusau said. “There is no gain in crying over spilled milk. The focus now should be on the FIFA World Cup finals.”
The NFF president emphasized that the team’s goal should be to win the World Cup trophy for the first time, and assured them of the federation’s support in preparing for the tournament in Colombia later this year.
The Falconets have qualified for every edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since 2002. Gusau highlighted the team’s past performances, including reaching the final in 2010 and 2014, as well as the semi-finals in 2012 and the quarter-finals in 2018.
Gusau stressed the need for hard work, focus, and self-belief, noting that only five countries have won the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002: USA, Germany, DPR Korea, Japan, and Spain.
The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals will take place from September 31st to October 22nd in Colombia.
