
1913: Death Valley, U.S experiences the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth
Measurements showed that the temperature had reached a whopping 134ยฐF or 57ยฐC!
1924: The King Fuad I Edition of the Qurโan is published, at Egyptโs Al-Azhar University. Work began on the so-called โCairo Qurโan” in 1907. Immediately popular because it is easy to recite, its acceptance by both Sunni and Shiโa Muslims will make the work “the official text of the Qurโan.โ

1925: In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law. The law passed in March, made it a misdemeanor punishable by a fine to โteach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.โ

1940: The German Air Force or Luftwaffe launched an air campaign against England. It was one of the first battles during the Second World War fought entirely between air forces and it ended a few months later with a British victory.
1962: Telstar, the world’s first communication satellite is launched into space
The satellite, made by a collaboration between organizations in the U.S., the U.K., and France, transmitted the first live television images in the world.

1967: New Zealand adopts new currency
The New Zealand pound was replaced by the New Zealand dollar. The denominations of the new currency followed a decimal system.
1985: French foreign intelligence agents blow up the Greenpeace boat Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbor, New Zealand to prevent it from interfering with French nuclear tests in the South Pacific. Dutch photographer Fernando Pereira is killed.

2000: In Togo, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan opens the Heads of State Summit of the Organisation of African Unity. Concerned over the number of coups dโรฉtat that are destabilising African countries, the conference produces the Lomรฉ Declaration that calls for a shared set of democratic values continentally.

2019: German automaker Volkswagen ended production of the Beetle, the first model of which had been introduced in 1938.

2015: Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, who garnered international acclaim for his roles in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965), died at 83.

2019: West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea is now the world’s most dangerous spot for piracy, reports the International Maritime Bureau in its mid-year piracy report: 73% of all kidnappings at sea and 92% of hostage-takings during the first half of this year occurred off the coasts of Nigeria, Togo, Cameroon, Guinea, and Benin. By international law cargo ships cannot carry any weapons, and crews must fight armed pirates with water hoses.
