Highlighting its global reputation for nurturing talent, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria, celebrates David Akanmu’s remarkable achievement as the Best Graduating Student (BGS)/Valedictorian of its 54th Convocation Ceremonies.
Akanmu’s distinction extends further as he secures the prestigious 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholarship, announced by Stanford University’s Knight-Hennessy Scholars on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
UNILAG stands out as the sole African institution among the sixty universities contributing to the 2024 cohort of 90 new scholars. Akanmu, one of only five Africans selected, holds the distinction of being the sole representative from an African-based tertiary institution in this record-breaking seventh cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars.
Akanmu, the third UNILAG graduate to earn the esteemed Knight-Hennessy Scholar Award, sets his sights on a Ph.D. in Energy Science and Engineering at Stanford University’s Doerr School of Sustainability.
His stellar performance, boasting a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 in Civil Engineering, propelled him to this prestigious honour during UNILAG’s Convocation Ceremonies in January 2024.
The Knight-Hennessy Scholars programme, spanning all seven schools at Stanford University, champions a diverse and interdisciplinary cohort. Offering up to three years of financial support, the programme equips scholars like Akanmu with the tools to become visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders, tackling global challenges head-on.
Selection criteria emphasize independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset.
As the spotlight shines on Akanmu’s success, aspiring scholars are reminded that applications for the 2025 cohort will open on June 1, 2024, closing on October 9, 2024.
