Crystal James has made history by becoming the first black woman to secure Michigan University and its three campuses all at once. James will lead the police force on the Ann Arbor campus, the responsibility she had been overseeing since 2023 on an interim basis, which she has now taken over officially.
Her responsibility will transcend traditional policing, embracing oversight of university housing, museum security, and crime prevention initiatives.
She looks forward to collaborating with students, commuters, and healthcare workers, building relationships, and ensuring a safe environment.
James’ experience as the Deputy Chief on the Dearborn campus, will be handy in her new duty.
The police chief expressed, “I am honoured to take on this responsibility. And I have a deep sense of pride. It is a privilege to lead our police and security teams. They are professionals and well trained, and understand the importance of Service.”
