The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has taken action against two students for breaching the University’s rules.
In letters dated February 21, 2024, and signed by the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, the suspension of Otu Ime Monday and Prosper Ndubueze was announced.
Otu Ime Monday, a student in the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education, was suspended for disobeying the management’s directive prohibiting the position of “Class Representativesโ.
The suspension followed reports that Otu Ime Monday had sent text messages on WhatsApp inviting students to a drinking gathering in town, under the guise of an “induction into Class Rep Forum of National Association of Library Science Students (NALISS) department”.
The meeting was scheduled for Eta-Agbor Layout Overhead Tank at 4 pm on February 8, 2024, and attendees were asked to bring a bottle of Gordon Dry gin, a bottle of groundnut, and a foundation levy of two thousand naira. Consequently, the Vice Chancellor approved Otu Ime Monday’s suspension from studies.
Similarly, Prosper Ndubueze from the Faculty of Pharmacy was suspended for physically assaulting Faith Chinedu, a female student of the university, causing her bodily harm.
The suspension was deemed necessary as such actions violate the Students’ code of conduct outlined in the Students’ Handbook. Prosper Ndubueze’s suspension also takes effect from the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education, the Head of the Department of Library Science, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the acting Chief Security Officer have been instructed to ensure full compliance with the suspension directives.
The suspended students are advised to stay away from campus unless summoned by the Students Disciplinary Committee, which has been tasked with investigating the matter.
