Nigerian actress Yvonne Jegede is facing intense criticism on social media for divorcing her husband, Olakunle Fawole.
Many commentators are rebuking her for stating that she was the breadwinner of the family and implying that she chose love over financial stability.
Temple Jay remarked that Jegede’s statement suggests she prioritized money over love, while Ilawalogbon Happy generalized that women often prioritize financial security over love.
Suleiman Muritala added that men typically marry for love, while women marry for financial security.
Ben Emmanuel Ekom noted that when men are the breadwinners and show love and care, there is usually no conflict, but when the dynamic changes, the man becomes disregarded.
In an interview with OAP Nedu Wazobia on his podcast, Jegede revealed that financial mismatch was a significant factor in their breakup, but not the only one.
She felt pressured to provide for the family solely on her own and took pride in caring for her child alone.
Jegede also mentioned that her husband, who is eight years older, took offense when she called him “crazy” during their conversations, despite their long history together before marriage.
