Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has won the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award at the 2024 BET Awards.
Tems received the award for her song “Me & U”, beating out prominent American gospel artists Kirk Franklin and Cece Winans.
This marks Tems’ fourth BET Award win, having previously won Best International Act and Best Collaboration in 2022, and Best Collaboration again in 2023.
Other Nigerian artists, including Ayra Starr and Asake, did not win their respective categories.
Starr and Asake were unsuccessful in their bids for the “Best International Act” award at the BET Awards, losing to South Africa’s Tyla. Starr also missed out on the “Best New Artist” award, which was also won by Tyla.
In another category, Seyi Vibez lost the “Best New International Act” award to South Africa’s Makhadzi.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy lost the “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist” award to Usher and the “Best Hip-hop Artist” award to Kendrick Lamar.
The BET Awards, founded by Black Entertainment Television in 2001, recognize and celebrate the achievements of Black entertainers and other underrepresented groups in music, film, sports, and philanthropy.
