The Enugu State Government has come out in strong support of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), assuring the organization of its backing to proceed with its exams despite threats from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
IPOB had warned WAEC to cancel its examination scheduled for May 30, 2024, or risk putting students’ lives in danger.
However, the Enugu State Government, through its Commissioner for Information and Communication, Aka Eze Aka, has cautioned IPOB against disrupting the ongoing WAEC exams.
The government has pledged adequate security to ensure the safety of students and residents and has urged everyone to go about their lawful activities and exams on May 30 without fear.
The Commissioner expressed concern over IPOB’s threat, which aimed to endanger students’ lives under the guise of an unsafe environment in the Biafra territory.
The government has condemned IPOB’s illegal sit-at-home order, highlighting the severe repercussions of denying an entire generation of Enugu children the opportunity to sit for important exams like Mathematics.
The government has emphasized that denying students their right to education, which shapes and defines their future, is unacceptable.
It is worth noting that IPOB also attempted to disrupt the scheduled convocation ceremony at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) on the same day, claiming that May 30 is designated as Biafra Heroes Day and a sit-at-home day for all Biafrans.”
