The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed disapproval of the newly appointed university governing councils, characterizing the members as retired politicians lacking the necessary expertise for the positions.
According to ASUU Chairman Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, most members are former politicians who may not possess the required skills for strategic development in higher education institutions.
Professor Osodeke described the list as a regression in appointment policy, worse than its predecessors.
He lamented the procedural flaws and potential illegality in the formation of the new councils, stressing that the previous councils should have been allowed to complete their terms instead of assembling new ones.
ASUU emphasized that achieving quality education for economic emancipation requires distancing university education from partisan politics.
Professor Osodeke therefore advocated a re-evaluation of the constitution of university councils.
The Federal Government had dissolved the previous councils ten months ago, despite their unexpired tenures, contradicting the University Acts’ stipulations.
