Afrobeats legend D’banj has expressed regret over not having children earlier in life, admiring the new generation of musicians who started families at a younger age.
In a chat with Beat FM in Lagos, he observed that many artists in their 30s now have teenage children, which he finds endearing.
“I feel left out. I sometimes call 2face to tease him about not encouraging me to start a family earlier.
“It’s a different experience when you see them celebrating with their kids. They’re in their 30s, and their children are teenagers,” said D’banj.
He attributes his delayed fatherhood to the stricter moral code his generation of musicians faced, compared to the more relaxed standards of today.
He notes that having a child outside of marriage could have ruined a musician’s career in his time, whereas the new generation is celebrated for having children out of wedlock.
He jokingly blames 2face Idibia, who has multiple children outside of marriage, for not encouraging him to follow suit. However, D’banj acknowledges that having children requires mental and financial readiness.
“It goes beyond people; it’s about your state of mind. Are you prepared to embrace the responsibilities that come with having children? If you’re ready, that’s what matters most.”
