Head Coach Bankole Olowookere is optimistic that Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, will maintain their momentum as they face Liberia in the final qualifying match for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Abuja today.
“We are prepared for the match on Friday. The girls are eager to compete because they are determined to qualify for the World Cup. They are already envisioning their journey to the Dominican Republic,” Olowookere stated. “There is a lot of enthusiasm in the camp, and they are confident. However, I have reminded them that the game isn’t over until the final whistle. We must approach the match as if the first leg ended in a draw.”
Nigeria secured a 4-1 victory in the first leg in Monrovia on Sunday, with Harmony Chidi, Shakirat Moshood, Peace Effiong, and substitute Blessing Ifitezue scoring for the Flamingos. Liberia’s consolation goal came from a penalty in the final minutes at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
If the Flamingos win on Friday, they will participate in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the seventh time. They previously competed in the inaugural edition in New Zealand in 2008, and subsequently in Trinidad and Tobago 2010, Azerbaijan 2012, Costa Rica 2014, Jordan 2016, and India 2022, where they won bronze medals.
