The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) began as the Association of Tax Administrators and Practitioners on February 4, 1982.
It later became the Nigerian Institute of Taxation, which was formally launched on February 21, 1982, and gained statutory recognition on May 6, 1987, as a Company Limited by Guarantee.
The Federal Government of Nigeria chartered the Institute through the enabling Act No. 76 of 1992 (now CITN Act, CAP C10, Vol. 2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004).
The institute determines the standard of knowledge and skills required for individuals seeking to become professional Tax Practitioners or Administrators.
Eligibility
To be eligible, prospective candidates must possess the basic minimum educational qualification as stipulated by the Council:
- A First Degree, Higher National Diploma, or its equivalent
- NYSC certificate
Undergraduate students seeking to apply as student members must possess:
- Five O’Level credits in WAEC, GCE, or NECO in not more than two sittings, including English and Mathematics (an O’Level pass in Mathematics is acceptable for humanities students, while an O’Level pass in English is acceptable for science students)

Exam Date
The CITN April 2024 diet examination took place on Tuesday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Prospective candidates can contact the institute for further clarification.
