Lecturers in the Faculty of Management Sciences of the University of Lagos have undergone a 2-day insightful workshop on Case Teaching and Writing Skills to use cases to help students.
The training session, which was held Between Wednesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 18, was facilitated by Dr. Jubril Salaudeen, a consultant and faculty member at Nungu Business School, as well as an adjunct faculty, at Lagos Business School.
Attending the training were lecturers drawn from all departments in the faculty in a workshop described by the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor A. A Sulaimon, as a train-the-trainers machinery to equip participants who would train other members of the faculty.
According to him, the workshop was in fulfillment of one of his mandates to regularly hold training and workshops for staff of the faculty.
The facilitator, Dr Salaudeen, explained that the Case Method was a practical way of learning business, financial, and managerial skills, adding that it was achieved through discussion of real-life situations that business executives had experienced.
Dr Salaudeen explained that cases help sharpen the analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and professional sense of management of students, among others.
He urged participants to make use of the opportunity of things happening around the society and develop cases out of them.
He said what kept certain fast-moving consumer goods in the market; why some goods had fizzled out; what had kept certain organizations through many generations; and why some organization had died should be given consideration.
The consultant advised that this method of learning could be used to teach senior-level undergraduate and postgraduate classes, saying the method could be utilized within 5 to 45 minutes in a class.
On ways to handle students and drive conversation, he advised that with the case method, there was no right and wrong answer, as viable answers would sprout up during the discussion due to diversity of opinion and thought patterns.
