Former Super Eagles player and football legend, Daniel Amokachi, has stressed the importance of combining football with education, saying if not for little education he would have stumbled.
Amokachi said this during a recent Confederation of African Football (CAF) event which took place in Ivory Coast, Abidjan on Wednesday.
CAF, in conjunction with a local school, played host to Kick and Learn Event, which took place at the Lycee Classique de Cocody, Abidjan, raising an awareness about the importance of education in sports.
The former Everton player was one of the African football legends currently witnessing the ongoing 34th edition of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
Amokachi expressed, “We know how important it is to combine football and education; I always tell people, whatever I tell them is a testimony because it is not a hearsay…”
“I kicked my last professional football at the age of 27, and if I didn’t get that little background when it comes to education, I probably would have stumbled,” said him.
Also a former Assistant Coach of Super Eagles, he stated that a lot of legends are struggling to get involved in the system, but that education helps, expressing that he worked with Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and CAF.
A superb footballer during his time, he added that he also worked in the broadcasting industry, warning that it was not only about playing football, but having education which would ensure life after football.
Amokachi attended Government College Kaduna, possessing coaching badges and professional courses, and had got a scholarship to study Law in Texas, United States of America, which he didn’t complete.
