The Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences at Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, Kwara State, recently achieved a significant milestone by obtaining accreditation from the Council of Nigeria Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG). The accreditation certificate was officially presented during a ceremony held in Abuja, marking the university’s dedication to maintaining high standards in its Geological Science program.
The accreditation process involved a thorough inspection of facilities by COMEG, which visited approximately 30 Nigerian universities offering Geosciences, Marine Engineering, Metallurgy, and Mining Engineering Programs. The assessment team conducted their evaluation at Al-Hikmah University from October 25th to 28th, 2023.
The Induction and Accreditation Certificate Presentation ceremony took place on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Rockview Hotel, Abuja. Dignitaries present included the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Oladele Alake, COMEG’s President, Prof. Zachaeus Opafunsho, Council members, and Heads of relevant departments from geological sciences and mining programs across Nigerian universities.
During his address, the Honourable Minister emphasized the need for economic diversification, highlighting that the era of relying solely on oil for economic development is over. He commended the inductees and challenged them to continuously pursue learning opportunities, underscoring the importance of not taking their training for granted as the nation looks to them for contributions to its revitalization.
A significant moment of the event was the symbolic presentation of the COMEG Accreditation Certificate to the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Noah Yusuf. The Honourable Minister, in recognition of the university’s outstanding performance in the accreditation exercise, presented the certificate to Prof. Yusuf, who was represented by the Head of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences, Dr. AbdulRasaq K. Haruna.
Dr. Alake commended Al-Hikmah University for its exemplary work, encouraging other institutions to follow suit. He urged Prof. Yusuf to maintain and enhance his quality leadership for the benefit of the university and the broader academic community.
