As the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is being rescheduled for candidates whose results were cancelled due to alleged non-compliance at some CBT centers, Nigerian universities and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) may not be able to determine their cut-off marks yet.
JAMB has announced that 24,535 candidates will sit for a supplementary exam between Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, 2024. As they prepare for the exam, candidates are focused on scoring high, just like those who sat for their exam earlier and were lucky enough to have their results intact.
While a good UTME score is essential, candidates should note that admission to any Nigerian university depends on various factors beyond high scores.
After securing a good UTME score, the following factors will determine admission:
- Cut-off marks: Universities and departments will determine their cut-off marks based on candidates’ performance in the UTME and post-UTME.
- Course competitiveness: Candidates choosing competitive courses like Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, and Accounting require higher scores for admission. Less competitive courses may have lower cut-off marks.
- University reputation: Admission may be challenging if a candidate chooses a course that a university is renowned for, with a low score.
- University capacity: The number of students a university can admit in a year affects admission chances. Candidates have a higher chance of admission if the university has a larger capacity.
- Quota system, catchment area, state of origin, and educationally less disadvantaged states: These factors can influence admission, allowing candidates with lower scores to be admitted.
In summary, while a good UTME score is crucial, candidates must consider these factors to enhance their chances of securing admission to their preferred university.
