How to Score High Marks in 2024 UTME

The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) comes up on April 19, 2024. As the exam draws closer, what should preoccupy any candidate’s mind is how to score high marks to secure admission.

Scoring high marks does not come easy unless you work hard enough. Nevertheless, the high score is not an impossibility at a sitting in UTME if a candidate devises the right strategies to beat the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) during the examination.

We’ve seen candidates score high marks and get admitted in just one attempt for courses that require high scores.

We’ve also seen candidates that sat for UTME many times before they secured admission, or that have not been able to secure admission even up till now.

However, these strategies if adopted will earn you an admission offer if you adhere to them strictly.

Prepare Early

The first and most important strategy is to start preparing for the exam early. Never wait until when registration commences. Start on time. For those who didn’t start on time, you can still cope with the time left, if you are serious. What is required of you is to begin to study, and burn the candle at both ends.

Get Recommended Textbooks

You must get the JAMB’s recommended texts so that you prepare within what is expected of you. Everytime, JAMB has its recommended textbooks for each subject; so get these textbooks and prepare with them.

Be Ambitious

This is one of the strategies to beat JAMB. Aim high and tell yourself that you want to score 300 and above. Pursue this ambition and work towards it to enable it to come to fruition. It’s one thing to be ambitious, it’s another thing to actualize it.

Strive for Effective Study

Study effectively and efficiently. Study all the time. Don’t be playful. Schedule a time to study every day. Be consistent. Set a goal for yourself. Design a timetable. Don’t procrastinate. Be diligent. Study the most difficult subjects well.

Plan and Manage Your Time

Plan your time and manage it in such a way that you attend to all subjects and questions within the stipulated time. Do the easy questions first before going to the difficult ones, but be conscious of time.

Study with JAMB Syllabus

JAMB has a syllabus, so get the syllabus and study with it. Studying with the syllabus will make you to be conversant with what JAMB wants. The syllabus gives you what you should study, and you find the list of topics you should cover there. You also get the hint of likely questions there. The syllabus will guide you and give you the direction to go.

Study with Past Questions

If you study with JAMB past questions, they will guide you on what you are likely to come across in the examination. You will be familiar with how questions are framed, the time allotted to each subject, and the pattern of questions. Ensure you practise with JAMB CBT Software and the JAMB Mobile App.

Make Friends with like-minded candidates and those who have passed JAMB.

Try as much as you can to get in touch with those who have sat for JAMB and passed, especially in your area of interest. Tap into their experience. Ask them questions on what they did during their time, and how they succeeded. Make friends with those candidates of like mind.

Other Strategies

Identify your areas of weakness and strength. Ensure that you are not far from the necessary information. Be aware of updates sent by the board from time to time. Attend JAMB coaching class.
