Lots of candidates who applied for admission to the 2023/2024 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) are curious to know the state of their admission.
They felt they should have been admitted one way or the other by now, but they have yet to find their way into the universities of their choice.
They rather wonder why JAMB keeps them endlessly waiting, heightening their anxiety and wasting their time. Questions upon questions they keep asking, wanting to know why their admissions are delayed.
Qualifications/Requirements
Findings by BlackCampus Online Magazine reveal that there are protocols and steps that these candidates must adhere to before admission is offered by JAMB.
According to these findings, a prospective candidate who has applied to be a student of any Nigerian university ought to have known that admission will not be granted until JAMB’s protocols are observed. Candidates have to possess the requisite qualifications as required by JAMB.
Such candidates must have obtained their 5 O’Level subjects with credit pass, sat for the appropriate subject combination in UTME, and obtained the right subject combinations at the O’Level with credit pass.
Also, those prospective candidates must meet the JAMB cut-off mark, the departmental cut-off mark, and the post-UTME cut-off mark as well as, do well in the stipulated post-UTME screening exercise.
If any of these is found to be at variance with what is stipulated by the Board, admission will never be granted.
Admission Processing
After a candidate has ensured that he has fulfilled all the conditions stipulated by JAMB and universities, all other things are left for the institutions of choice to process.
The universities upload or shortlist the names of their preferred candidates on JAMB’s Central Admission Processing System (CAP). This is after verification by the school of choice, which must have been diligently executed.
Delayed Admission
If a candidate’s admission is delayed it may mean various things. The delay could be due to the time it takes the university to compile the admission list, verify the credentials of the candidates, and forward the lists of candidates that have scaled through to JAMB for approval. This delay will cause the JAMB’S CAPS to remain blank for a while.
The institution you chose might not have released its admission list at the time a candidate checked his status, it will appear on the CAPS that you have not been offered admission yet.
For Direct Entry candidates, new things have been introduced according to JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who said the Board had changed the modality for admitting candidates who apply through Direct Entry.
He disclosed at a forum that Direct Entry candidates would henceforth be sitting for a qualifying test in that the Board discovered that many of such candidates do not possess the qualifications that they claim they hold.
Failed Verification
Following this, the Board recently suspended the admission of 10,378 direct entry students who wrote the examination organized for them due to failed verification.
Their ‘A’ Level issuing institutions had failed to forward their verification report to JAMB when asked to do so. In February 2023, the Board issued an advisory to guide candidates seeking to gain admission through Direct Entry in the 2023/2024 academic session basically to address the issue of candidates using unacceptable or forged “A’ Level certificates or qualifications to gain admission.
The Board directed these candidates to get in touch with their former institution as soon as possible to verify their certificates, saying it would not accept unverified certificates.
However, over 240 Institutions comprising mainly polytechnics and colleges of education have failed to send the verification reports of the A’ Level results of their candidates seeking admission; hence candidates who have their results or qualification in such schools are doomed unless they yield to the instruction from JAMB.
Time Admission is Granted
Investigation by BlackCampus Online Magazine shows that at times, it takes three or four months for an admission to be granted as disclosed by an official of JAMB who does not want his name in print.
Even after a candidate’s admission is in progress on CAPS, it takes 2 to 3 weeks before it changes to the real admission; hence it requires a lot of patience.
Factors that may Hinder Admissions
If a candidate does not meet the departmental cut-off, he may not be admitted. At times, the wrong subject combination hinders admission. A candidate also has to meet the UTME and post-UTME cut-off marks. A candidate has to sit for appropriate subject combinations during the UTME. He also has to ensure that the course of study he is applying for is accredited, otherwise, JAMB won’t give admission, or rather if he is offered admission by JAMB he may be taken to another institution.
Conclusion
However, observers think that the JAMB admission process should address the endless waiting suffered by candidates, as well as devise a means by which the Board will create effective communication with its candidates to keep them abreast of new developments that affect both.
