As insecurity remains Nigeria’s nightmare, TouchNut app developed by the students of Federal University of Technology Akure has been identified to aid security system.
According to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adenike Oladiji, the software, developed by a 400 level student of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Daniel Adeniyi, is being used to regulate entry and exit of students into Albert Ilemobade Library, as well as monitor activities.
Speaking on the app further, Professor Adenike disclosed that the major advantage of the software “is that it provides easy-to-use identification system that helps the security unit monitor the activities that go on in the library.”
She added, “It provides an Intranet server that contains student’s information and come with an Intranet connection. It’s server is also well secured ensuring the security students information from easy access on the internet.”
She said with TouchNut app, students can borrow books and library staff will not need to worry about its return on its expiration date because the software would track down the student’s card and notify the staff.
She explained that TouchNut will be useful for the security unit as it helps them check people in and out of the library.
“It also helps the Circulation Unit because it helps them create user profiles for students, develop and assign cards as well. Lastly is the Management Unit because the Management has complete oversight of everything that happens in the library.”
However, since it has been approved by the VC, FUTA has begun the test run of the software for access control.
The VC said steps would be taken for the deployment of the software in other relevant areas including campus shuttle transportation after the test run.
“The students are being helped on the path of products development, registration of their intellectual property and its commercialization,” the VC said.
