The duo of Afrobeats singers, Ayodeji Balogun aka Wizkid and Temilade Openiyi aka Tems are not listed among African musicians who have grabbed at least a golden gramophone.
The release of the list is a prelude to the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards scheduled for February 4, 2024.
The list parades an array of singers who have won the award at one time or other comprising, the late South African singer, Mariam Makeba, for Best Folk Recording in 1966, the British-born Nigerian singer, Sade Adu, for Best New Artist in 1986 and Burna Boy for Best Global Music Album in 2021.
Both Tems and Wizkid are conspicuously missing from the list, as Tem won her first Grammy Award in the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ for her role in ‘Wait for U’ featuring Drake category, in 2022, while Wizkid 2021 won his Grammy for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl,’ a 2019 song by Beyonce in the ‘Best Music Video’ category.
The list also included singers such as Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, RedOne, Tinariwen, and Black Coffee.
The organizer recognized that King Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti, Babatunde Olatunji, and Wizkid had all received a Grammy nod ahead of Burna Boy.
