MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) has introduced ‘Best Afrobeat’ category in its list of awards, saying it’s a testament to the global impact and influence of what they described as a vibrant genre.
The Senior Vice President and General Manager for Paramount Africa and Lead for BET International, Monde Twala, during the nomination ceremony of the awards, expressed how thrilled they were to introduce the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category.
To live up to the commitment of recognizing the impact of Afrobeat, MTV EMAs nominated array of Afrobeat singers such as Asake, Davido, BurnaBoy, Ayra Star and Aya Nakamura for ‘Best Afrobeat’ category in the awards.
Both Asake and BurnaBoy were nominated for the ‘Best African Act’, while the former was again nominated for the ‘Best Live’ category.

Another Afrobeat singer, Rema, got nominated for ‘Best Song’ category for the ‘Calm Down’ remix.
According to Twala, “The year 2023 was a historic moment for the MTV EMAs as they proudly embrace and celebrate the “rich diversity of talents from across the globe.”
The MTV EMAs 2023 comes up at Paris Nord Villepinte, operated by Viparis, in France on Nov. 5, 2023.
Since 1995, the live event is coming back to Paris amid a colourful immersive MTV EMA wonderland to be enjoyed by fans.
The event will enjoy live broadcast on MTV in more than 150 countries.
They are awards presented by Paramount International Network to honour artists and music in pop culture.
