Crescent University, located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has officially inaugurated Professor Ibrahim Gambari as its new Chancellor during the institution’s 15th Convocation ceremony held over the weekend.
In addition to this prestigious appointment, Professor Gambari, who previously served as the Chief of Staff to Nigeria’s former president, Mohammadu Buhari, was also honored with a Doctorate of Science (DSc.) Honoris Causa. This recognition was shared with three other eminent individuals: His Highness Oba Moshood Ola Yusuf, Mr. Yakubu Layi Gobir, and Dr. Babatunde Wale-Okewale. These accolades were conferred to express gratitude for their remarkable contributions to various fields, including business, education, philanthropy, healthcare, and the accounting profession.
During the installation ceremony of the new Chancellor, Prince Muhammed Mahruf Adesegun Ajibola (SAN), the Proprietor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Crescent University, praised Professor Gambari for his outstanding academic background, distinguished career as a diplomat, and statesmanship. He stated that Professor Gambari was the most suitable candidate to succeed the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, as the Chancellor.
Prince Ajibola also pledged that Crescent University, under Professor Gambari’s leadership, would continue to fulfill the expectations and aspirations of its founding father. The university aims to build upon its previous achievements while seeking new opportunities to enhance the welfare of its staff and students, as well as further develop its infrastructure. Prince Ajibola recognized the substantial financial contributions made by the late Judge of the International Court of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola, in transforming the university and promised to continue supporting its development.
The newly appointed Chancellor congratulated the graduating students and the three awardees. He praised the university for ensuring that its graduates possess not only academic knowledge but also strong moral character, emphasizing the importance of character in addition to learning.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Gbajabiamila, highlighted the invaluable knowledge that the graduates had acquired during their time at the university and encouraged them to be prepared to face future challenges confidently. He also extended an invitation for them to join the Crescent University Alumni Community, which includes successful professionals and entrepreneurs who have contributed to society.
Furthermore, Professor Gbajabiamila assured that the university would maintain its commitment to academic excellence and quality, emphasizing that all academic programs at the institution hold full accreditation from the National Universities Commission.
The high point of the convocation was the awarding of both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to the graduates, as well as the conferral of honorary degrees. Oba Moshood Ola Yusuf received a Doctor of Accounting degree, Mr. Yakubu Gobir was honored with a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa in Business Administration, and Dr. Babatunde Wale-Okewale was granted a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa in Health Science. In response, the awardees expressed their dedication to upholding the university’s tradition of academic and moral excellence and contributing to its development.
