For project managers, the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification remains the most recognized credential.
It demonstrates that you have the experience, skills, education, and competence to lead and direct projects successfully.
Administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) USA, the PMP certification requires:
- A degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or global equivalent)
- 7,500 hours leading and directing projects
- 35 hours of project management education
Alternatively, you can have:
- A four-year degree
- 4,500 hours leading or directing projects
- 35 hours of project management education
The PMP exam is available year-round at Prometric testing centers, subject to availability. The exam consists of:
- 180 multiple-choice questions
- 230 minutes duration
- 5 pretest questions (not scored)
The exam is a center-based test (CBT), and the date is determined by the test taker. PMP certification is valid for three years, after which you must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) from PMI or retake the exam.
