Besides securing admission through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), candidates can tap into the opportunity offered by the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB). This means you need not cry when you perform below par in JAMB, you can also seek admission to Nigerian universities through JUPEB.
JUPEB was approved as a national examination body in Nigeria by the Federal Government in the year 2013.
It gives candidates the opportunity to gain Direct Entry admission to the second year of any course of choice.
It is a programme specifically designed for candidates who cannot secure admission into
the regular degree programmes in Nigerian Universities.
However, you must still meet the cut-off mark. JUPEB may appear tougher than Advanced Level (A’ level) examination, but some candidates who know how to prepare very well for this exam still make up to 12 points and above.
Structure of the JUPEB Examination
JUPEB examination comprises two papers for candidates in Science, French, Music, and Visual Arts.
The candidates in Arts, Humanities, Management, and Social Sciences offer only one paper.
Paper 1 contains two sessions. Session A contains 50 multiple-choice items, while session B consists of eight essay items.
For candidates with two papers, Paper II will examine candidates on the Practical Skills examination in relevant subjects.
Requirements
Candidates only need to obtain O’Level results. Those who are awaiting results can also enroll. JUPEB candidates are required to select any three A/L JUPEB subjects combination suitable to their preferred course of study.
They sit for the final exam, out of which successful candidates use their certificate to secure admission into 200 Level in Nigerian universities through Direct Entry.
Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 O’Level credits in not more than two sittings in at least five subjects, which are relevant to their preferred course of study. They must also obtain credit in the English Language.
Each candidate must register, sit for examinations, and satisfy the Board in three subjects and General Studies courses relevant to the proposed course in any of the Universities.
The subjects will be divided into four courses to be offered. Candidates will offer two of the four courses per semester. The results in all the courses are merged at the end of the second semester to obtain the candidates’ grades in the particular subject.
JUPEB is accepted and recognized by more than 60 percent of the nation’s federal, state, and private universities. it is equivalent to Advanced Level GCE, Higher School Certificate (HSC), OND, and NCE.
Subjects Examined
JUPEB offers examinations in Accounting, History, Biology, Business Studies, Management, Chemistry, Economic Geography, Christian Religious Studies (CRS), Geology, Government, Igbo, Yoruba, Islamic Studies, Literature-in-English, Physics, Sociology, and Hausa.
Approval
It is certified by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and has an advanced level examination certificate that qualifies a candidate into the 200 Level by Direct Entry.
Period of Programme
JUPEB is designed to run for one year which is divided into two semesters.
