Students of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science University of Lagos were drilled and sensitized on preventive measures against fire outbreak. The drill and sensitization training were conducted by the University of Lagos Fire Service (UFC).
According to the Head of Fire Services Unit, Mr Wasiu Jimoh, the campaign was initiated to create awareness for members of the university community on ways to prevent fire outbreaks and role of volunteer responders in small fire emergencies.
Jimoh said the training would further “…prepare and train the community on fire prevention and emergency responses,” noting the university community is passionate about creating an environment and culture of safety through the fire safety programme.
The programme was divided into both practical and theory sessions. The theory session, which was held in one of the laboratories at Faculty of Science, centred on teaching and guiding the students on effective action that can make the difference between a small incident and catastrophic emergency.
During this session, students were taken through Fire Safety Education and Training, Fire Safety Training Goals, and Prosper Handling and storage Procedures for Flammable and Combustible Materials.
The practical aspect, which was held at UFS Station on the campus, saw students shown several tip to curb fire outbreaks.
