The Alumni Association at the University of Ghana (UGAA) has introduced a publication encapsulating the impactful lecture delivered by Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi during the 2023 Alumni Lecture.
Dr. Oteng-Gyasi, the former Chairman of the UG Council and Founder of Tropical Cable & Conductor Ltd, presented a lecture titled “The Fault, Dear Brutus,” which garnered considerable praise and recognition. The lecture has now been transformed into a book, and its official launch took place at the Alumni Centre on the Legon Campus.
During the launch event, Dr. Oteng-Gyasi provided a brief overview of key points from the book, expressing optimism about its potential positive influence. Within the compelling narrative, he delves into Ghana’s history, skillfully illustrating how the actions of indigenous Ghanaians, particularly in economic and policy realms, have significantly shaped the nation. Noteworthy examples include the resistance of timber loggers and millers against the exportation ban on logs in the 1980s.
Advocating for increased collaboration between academia and industry, Dr. Oteng-Gyasi proposes this as a crucial step toward finding solutions to longstanding challenges faced by the country, such as the difficulties in implementing the provisions of the Procurement Law.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving intellectual ideas, Emeritus Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, former Vice-Chancellor at UG and Chairperson for the occasion, urged the Alumni Association to consistently publish each Alumni Lecture. He underscored the relevance of the central theme of the book in addressing contemporary issues in Ghana, particularly those related to natural reserves.
Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, expressed joy and conveyed Management’s support for the Alumni Association. He encouraged continued collaboration for the betterment of both the Association and the wider UG community.
Ms. Doris Ansah, Chairman of the UG Alumni Association, stressed the significance of giving back to the University through fundraising efforts, supporting various campus needs, and assisting students, among other initiatives, to elevate the university to world-class status.
The launch concluded with an auction, featuring competitive bids and fervent interest from the audience. Notable figures in attendance included Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, past Vice-Chancellor at UG; Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, Pro Vice-Chancellor for RID; Mr. Paa Kwesi Yankey, Chairman of the Alumni Lecture Committee; Rev. Dr. Kojo Baah Parry, UG Alumni Association Council Member; Mr. Eric Mensah Bonsu,
Director of HR at Volta River Authority, alongside members of the UG Alumni Association, among others.
