Palpable fear may have gripped the candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), as the Federal Government announced that only 20 percent of those who sat for the examination will be admitted into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Compounding the fear is that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is set to release the first batch of 2024 UTME any moment soon.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, announced the percentage of candidates to be admitted while moving around UTME centres together with JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede to assess the situation in Abuja.
The low percentage of those to be offered admission as compared to 1.9 million candidates that registered for the UTME is a result of the Nigerian tertiary institutions not having the capacity to admit all the candidates, declared the Minister.
He added that due to sky-high tuition charges, private institutions would also find it difficult to fill the spaces in their universities.
He advised that parents should desist from mounting pressure on their children who may not be mature enough to pursue tertiary education.
Meanwhile, JAMB added that the result of the first batch of 2024 UTME would be released online as candidates can check their results from the official JAMB portal at efacility.jamb.gov.ng.
Candidates are advised to visit the JAMB website.
UTME took off on April 19 and will end on April 29, 2024.
