The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied the news circulating the social media that one Atung Gerald scored the highest point of 380 in the recently released 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The reaction by the Board is contained in its recent publication from the office of the Registrar, decrying that it was an unfortunate development that some individuals will randomly select a candidate from certain part of the country, parading him to have scored the highest point.
It would be recalled that Gerald was said to have got 380 in 2023 UTME, scoring 92 in Use of English, 94 in Physics, 96 in Chemistry and 98 in Biology, making a total mark of 380.
The Board noted that the development is capable of causing negative impression in the minds of members of the public, advising writers to always do their findings before breaking news which might be counter productive.
It observed with dismay how members of the public could also have been swayed, and how such publication could have been believed by even the elite.
JAMB explained, “For instance a careful study of the so called UTME registration number of the said candidate would have shown the people or groups pushing for this fake news are patent carriers of fake news as the registration number could readily be seen that it is non existence registration number given its false features.
It described as mere imagination the reward said to be awaiting the owner of the fake score, expressing that JAMB had never for any reason rewarded or recognized either lowest or highest scores in UTME.
According to the Board what it had done in the past was to make available the highest UTME scores which was not with the intent of honouring or rewarding such candidates.
However, the Board added that some rewards for highest score may have been championed in the past through private sector initiative, which according to JAMB is noble.
