Despite declaring that it was going to be thorough during the screening of the ministerial nominees, the Senate decided to favour seven of its former colleagues, asking them to take a bow.
This was contrary to what Senate Spokesperson, Yemi Adarawodu, had told journalists that Nigeria would not be disappointed with how it would conduct the screening, saying, “This time screening will be very thorough. It is not going to be a situation where the screening will be anyhow. We are going to know the background of the nominees, and we are not going to disappoint Nigerians…”
14 out of the nominees were screened by the Senate yesterday, while those who were asked to take a bow were seven which included All Progressive Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abubakar Kyari, Former Governor Nyesome Wike, Abubakar Momoh, Senator John Enoh, Abubakar Badaru, Nkiru Onyejiocha, and Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
This was not unconnected with the Senate’s tradition of asking former lawmakers to take a bow in a circumstance like what happened yesterday.
However, while these were lucky, others were drilled, as three nominees faced obstacles ranging from alleged age falsification, forgery, etc.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed that those who had issues to clear would have their cases looked into at the stage of confirmation.
