Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria, are urging the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and President Bola Tinubu in the ongoing issue of unpaid salary arrears and other punitive measures imposed by the authorities.
Expressing their plea during a recent protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, the teachers emphasized the urgency of addressing the challenges they face.
In addition to seeking assistance on salary matters, they called for a comprehensive review of the primary education structure nationwide.
The teachers are advocating for the Federal Government to assume responsibility for the administration of primary schools, relieving local government councils of the current oversight.
The educators criticized FCT Area Councils for neglecting their welfare and highlighted issues such as outstanding salary arrears, promotion arrears, and the non-payment of the new minimum wage since 2019.
As a result, the primary school teachers in the FCT have been on strike for over a week, with no tangible response from the relevant authorities as of yet.
