The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN has taken steps to regulate acting in Nigeria by setting up a special committee comprising 11 members who are veterans of the Nigerian movie industry.
This was made public by a release being circulated on social media that states that the President of the Guild, Dr Emeka Rollas, following the recent boat mishap that claimed the lives of five film practitioners, including the renowned actor, John Paul Odonwodo aka Junior Pope, has moved to curtail some irregularities in Nollywood.
Pope, alongside four others, lost their lives in River Niger when shooting a movie produced by Adanma Luke.
The release by AGN included foremost actors and actresses such as Emeka Ike, who will serve as the chairman of the committee, Joke Sylva, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Francis Duru, Bimbo Manuel, Patience Ozokwor, Hilda Dokubo, Abubakar Yakubu, Gideon Okeke, Anthony Ogbetere and Femi Branch.
The special committee is to fine-tune the existing bylaws to include the welfare of members, standard safety guidelines, and set protocols.
The committee shall engage all relevant guilds and associations for the full implementation, as well as recommend disciplinary measures against erring members, producers, and production companies.
It shall seek further engagement with Guilds/Associations and relevant stakeholders on drafting general bylaws for the industry.
Also, part of the terms of reference of the committee is to recommend possible requirements in setting up a royalty-collecting body or rights-collecting society for performers in Nollywood.
