In a race that has generated tension, intrigues, intense lobby and politicking over weeks, Senator Godswill Akpabio, representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, has emerged the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Senator Akpabio scored 63 votes to defeat his only challenger, Senator Abdul Aziz Yari who polled 46 votes in an election where all 109 members were present as none abstained.

Senator Akpabio, a two-time senator, was nominated by Senator Ali Ndume, who also stood by him, as he was being sworn in, while
Senator Abdul Yari, was nominated by Senator Abbo.
In the same vein, Senator Jubrin Barau, representing Kano North Senatorial District, was elected unopposed as the Deputy Senate President.
Barau was nominated by Senator Dave Umahi seconded by Senator Salau Mustapha representing Kwara Central Senatorial District.
